Egyptian giants Al Ahly have announced the departure of Spanish coach Jose Riveiro, just three months after his appointment at the end of May.
The decision came following a disappointing run of results, capped by Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Pyramids in the Nile Egyptian League.
Al Ahly’s decision to part ways with Spanish coach Jose Riveiro brings an end to a brief and difficult three-month spell in charge. Since his appointment in late May, Riveiro oversaw seven matches across two competitions – the FIFA Club World Cup and the Nile Egyptian League – but results fell far below expectations.
FIFA Club World Cup 2025 (USA):
Riveiro’s first test came on the global stage, where Al Ahly played in the group phase:
0-0 vs Inter Miami (USA) – a solid but uninspiring start.
0-2 vs Palmeiras (Brazil) – defeat against the South American giants.
4-4 vs Porto (Portugal) – an entertaining draw, considered Al Ahly’s best performance under Riveiro.
Al Ahly failed to progress from the group, collecting only two points from three games.
Nile Egyptian League:
Upon returning to domestic action, Riveiro’s side struggled for consistency:
2-2 vs Modern Sport
4-1 vs Pharco – his only victory with the club.
0-0 vs Ghazl El Mahalla
0-2 vs Pyramids – a result that ultimately sealed his departure.
After four rounds, Al Ahly sit in 12th place with just five points, one of their weakest league start in recent memory.
7 matches
1 win
4 draws
2 defeats
Riveiro’s tenure will be remembered for its lack of victories and inability to find momentum. Despite flashes of attacking promise – particularly in the 4-4 draw with Porto – results did not match the ambitions of a club of Al Ahly’s stature.
