Jupiler Pro League: Opoku brace confirms Zulte Waregem relegation escape

Joseph Opoku’s second half double confirmed a 2-1 victory on Sunday over FCV Dender and top flight football next season for Jupiler Pro League club Zulte Waregem.

After being forced to compete in the Belgian top division’s relegation group, Waregem only needed a few points to avoid the drop and their comeback victory over the league’s bottom club was enough to avoid any further anxiety.

Following a scoreless first half, David Hrnčár put hosts Dender ahead in the 48th minute and the action picked up. Before the hour mark, poor passing in the back from Dender allowed Anosike Ementa to win the ball in a dangerous position and his low cross found Opoku for a finish in off the crossbar.

Seven minutes later, the Ghanaian doubled his tally by showing excellent composure in the penalty area to finish from Jeppe Erenbjerg’s cross.

Opoku continues to develop well in Jupiler Pro League

The member of Ghana’s squad at the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations continues to establish himself as an attacker to watch. Last season, his debut campaign in Europe, saw the 20-year-old provide 3 goals and 8 assists in 26 league matches to earn promotion from the second tier Challenger Pro League and now he has a record of 7 goals and 5 assists in 29 appearances this season.

Opoku joined Waregem from Accra-based club Great Corinthians before establishing himself in the Ghana U-20 selection due to his strong debut campaign in Belgium. At the end of last season, he signed a two-year contract with an option for an additional two years.
