Kaizer Chiefs begin pre-season with fresh addition to the squad

Kaizer Chiefs officially began their pre-season preparations for the 2025/26 campaign today, Friday, June 20, with a notable new face joining the squad at their Naturena training base: DStv Diski Challenge left-back Kabelo Nkgwesa.

The Amakhosi squad returned from their off-season break, ready to continue building under the guidance of head coach Nasreddine Nabi.

Nabi took the reins in July 2024 on a two-year deal with an option for a further year, and notably ended the club’s 10-year trophy drought by winning the Nedbank Cup last month against Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

However, the Glamour Boys struggled in the league, finishing outside the top eight for the second consecutive season.

Nkgwesa, a key player in Chiefs’ DDC side, was instrumental in their historic first-ever DDC title last season.

His solid defensive performances contributed to the team’s record-breaking 70 points, achieved through 22 wins, four draws, and only two defeats in 28 games. His impressive season earned him both the Most Improved Player and Player of the Season awards at the DDC Chiefs’ award ceremony.

While the club has yet to make an official announcement, all indications suggest Nkgwesa will be a permanent fixture in Nabi’s senior squad as Edmilson Dove’s recent exit has opened up a crucial spot on the left flank.

Meanwhile, Amakhosi have also confirmed a pre-season camp in the Netherlands from July 3 to 19. While the full match schedule hasn’t been disclosed by Chiefs, Dutch side FC Utrecht has confirmed they will face the Soweto giants on July 11.
