Kaizer Chiefs crush Simba, march to CAF Confederation Cup group stage

Kaizer Chiefs delivered a powerful statement on the continental stage, crushing AS Simba with an impressive 3-1 victory to secure their spot in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.

The return leg of the second preliminary round tie saw Chiefs convincingly outclass their Congolese opponents in front of a packed Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto, sealing the aggregate victory after the 0-0 draw in Lubumbashi last Saturday.

First Half Blitz Seals the Deal For Kaizer Chiefs

Chiefs started the game like a house on fire, delivering an attacking masterclass that was arguably their best football of the season. It took less than three minutes for them to open the scoring when Etiosa Ighodaro netted his first goal in Chiefs colours, following up on a saved shot from Glody Lilepo.

The pressure was relentless, and it didn’t take long for the lead to be doubled. Kwinika made it 2-0 in the 14th minute. The blitz continued when Lilepo, scoring against a team from his home country, the DRC, struck in the 26th minute to make it 3-0, effectively taking the game beyond the reach of AS Simba before the half-hour mark. Simba registered only one shot on target in a disastrous first half for the visitors.

Missed Chances and Late Consolation

The second half began at a slower pace, with Kaizer Chiefs dominating possession and enjoying the freedom of their significant lead. They continued to create clear-cut chances but lacked the clinical edge shown earlier. George Matlou thought he had found the fourth goal in the 67th minute, but the effort was ruled offside. Ighodaro missed a golden opportunity for a brace just minutes later, hitting the crossbar in the 72nd minute.

With the game in hand, Chiefs players, notably Mduduzi Shabalala and Bradley Cross, began entertaining the crowd with a display of flair and showboating.

The only disappointment for Chiefs was failing to keep a clean sheet. Despite posing little threat throughout the match, AS Simba grabbed a consolation goal in the 80th minute due to a lapse in concentration from a long-range effort by Emmanuel Ntumba. The goal briefly injected confidence into Simba, but subsequent efforts were easily dealt with by Brandon Petersen.

Chiefs comfortably walked away 3-1 victors, with Pule Mmodi missing one final chance that should have easily been the fourth goal, but the mission was accomplished: the Buccaneers are heading to the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.
