The first slate of games from the 2025-26 season of South Africa’s Betway Premiership ended on Sunday with Kaizer Chiefs coming out on top by a 2-0 score over Stellenbosch FC at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.
A disastrous start for hosts Stellenbosch saw them reduced to ten players following Siviwe Nkwali’s red card for denying a clear goal scoring opportunity in the 13th minute. Shortly after, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo helped Amakhosi capitalize with his 15th minute free kick.
Stellies put on a brave resistance, creating opportunities in the first half despite their numerical disadvantage. However, Chiefs proceeded to dominate the second half before Makabi Lilepo converted from the penalty spot in the final moments of the game.
After finishing a disappointing 9th place last season, Chiefs supporters will be delighted with the positive start after rivals Orlando Pirates fell at home to Sekhukhune United while reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns could only manage a draw at Chippa United. In Sunday’s earlier game, top flight debutants Durban City won 2-0 at TS Galaxy in yet another surprise result.
Action resumes in the Betway Premiership on Tuesday with Pirates and Sundowns among the teams in action from three games. Pirates travel to face Marumo Gallants while Sundowns will host AmaZulu.
