Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef has explained the weight of expectation that comes with coaching the South African football giants.
In a post-match interview with SuperSport Television on Tuesday, the former AS Rabat trainer said the Soweto giants’ faithful demand nothing short of winning, hence the need to live up to their expectations.
Youssef said this in reaction to Chiefs 1-0 win over Richards Bay on Tuesday evening and what that means to the AmaKhosi faithful.
“I swear it is a big responsibility,” the coach said. “About the fans, every day, every two metres, you find one of our supporters and they say: ‘coach please we need to win, we need win’ [and] we do it for them.”
The former Yanga SC performance coach then disclosed how work behind the scene has been focusing on solid defending to avoid conceding goals cheaply.
“We discussed our defence,” Youssef added. “We need to be strong. We cannot accept that one of the biggest teams in South Africa, Kaizer Chiefs, should concede a lot of goals. Third clean sheet and a good performance from the team.”
Despite registering a third consecutive win, the Chiefs stand-in coach insisted that the team is still work in progress.
“There is something to correct but when you correct with winning, it is better than when you correct when you lose,” he noted.
Earlier during the week, Youssef dismissed talk that the Soweto giants perform better in head coach Nasreddine Nabi’s absence, stating that the entire technical staff remains in constant communication.
The Glamour Boys had, before facing Bay, won their opening two games, beating Stellenbosch 2-0 and Polokwane City 1-0 in the absence of Nabi. The Tunisian returned home to attend to his wife who was involved in a car accident.
