Kaizer Chiefs humbled by efficient Grobler and Sekhukhune

Sekhukhune United are the leaders of South Africa’s Betway Premiership following a 3-1 victory at Kaizer Chiefs on Tuesday.

Bradley Grobler scored twice and assisted Sekhukhune’s third goal scored by Thabang Monare to keep Babina Noko undefeated through six league matches.

Former Bafana Bafana striker Grobler was the first player to breach the Kaizer Chiefs goal in league play this season when the veteran provided a sliding finish to Tsepo Matsimbi’s cross, putting the visitors up within five minutes at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. Chiefs provided some resistance, leveling the match less than ten minutes later when recent signing Flavio Silva scored his second goal in two games.

But after an even clash through the first 45 minutes, Grobler and Sekhukhune’s efficiency was too much for AmaKhosi. After Chiefs failed to clear an incursion from their opponents in the 50th minute, chaos in the penalty area ended with Grobler’s instinctive finish to pull the visitors ahead.

Grobler’s most impressive contribution was perhaps not even his goals but his clever assist to put the match away in the 56th minute. The former SuperSport United legend produced a perfect flick-on header to send Monare in behind the Chiefs defense for a composed finish past goalkeeper Brandon Petersen to make it 3-1. Despite creating more clear opportunities in the match, it was a frustrating outing for Chiefs who were brought back to Earth after a strong start to the campaign.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, Durban City defeated Siwelele FC 2-0 while Chippa United edged visiting Orbit College at home 2-1.

What’s next for Kaizer Chiefs and Sekhukhune?

Sekhukhune are now top of the log by two points ahead of reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns and next host Golden Arrows on Saturday. Kaizer Chiefs have the weekend off from league action and will begin their continental efforts on Saturday in Angola, where they will face Angola Cup winners Kabuscorp in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup qualification clash.
