Kaizer Chiefs legend appointed head coach in Botswana

Kaizer Chiefs legend Reneilwe Letsholonyane has taken on a new challenge in Botswana as he has been appointed as the new head coach of Matebele FC.

Letsholonyane announced his move to the Botswana Premier League side on his official Instagram account on Sunday. His former teammate and close friend, Siphiwe Tshabalala, was by his side at the unveiling ceremony in Botswana to show his support.

Upon his unveiling, Letsholonyane shared a personal message that referenced a song, saying, “This song describes this journey. It is whatever ‘TSO…kong…kong…kong…’ means to you.” He continued, “To me, it means the excitement, nerves, and most of all, being grateful. Anyway, Ke le Tebele go tloga janong [loosely translated as ‘I’m part of Matebele FC as of today’].”

A day later on Monday, the club also confirmed Letsholonyane’s appointment with indications that he has signed a two-year deal with Matebele.

The move marks Letsholonyane’s first professional head coaching role, though he comes highly recommended with a CAF A Coaching Licence. He has previously worked with the AmaZulu FC reserve team and was part of the technical staff for the South African U-20 and Bafana Bafana CHAN squads.

Matebele FC’s Statement On Appointment of Letsholonyane

“We are excited to welcome Reneilwe ‘Yeye’ Letsholonyane as head coach of Matebele FC,” reads the club statement. “Mr Letsholonyane holds a CAF A coaching license. Coach Yeye joins the team at a time when our focus as a club is shifting towards younger players.

“As a club we have taken a deliberate decision to afford young players a chance to play premier league football from a young age and to amplify recruitment from lower divisions .This we hope will aid in the development of local players and getting them ready for the national team in the not so distant future.

“Coach Yeye has been working with young players since his retirement as a football player both at Amazulu and South Africa Under 20 national team. Coach Yeye officially started his new role on the 30th August 2025.”
