Kaizer Chiefs defender Edmilson Dove has admitted that the team have fallen short of fans’ expectations this season, but has urged his teammates to stay focused and keep fighting.
Amakhosi have endured a turbulent Betway Premiership campaign this season, sitting ninth in the table with 31 points from 27 games. However, they found redemption in the Nedbank Cup, edging rivals Orlando Pirates 2-1 in the final to lift the trophy.
“This is one of the biggest teams in Africa and when you come here, you come here to win titles, not to build or not find yourself in positions where we find ourselves now,” said Dove, as quoted by SABC Sports.
“So, from my particular opinion, I think at some point we have failed the club because we failed to deliver, but that's why we're given chances to fight for each and every opportunity we have.
“At this point in time we can't dwell on the past, we have to look forward and see what's ahead of us. Yes, obviously we could have had a better season, we could have done better, that is the sentiment amongst the group. But I think now we just want to focus on what we can do at the moment, and that's qualifying for the top eight.”
On fighting to finish amongst the top-eight teams, Dove said: “I think we can only control what we can, whatever we can't, we leave it in God's hands. I think the most important thing is focusing on ourselves and we'll do the counting at the end.
“All we want is to make sure that, come Saturday, we're ready and we get a positive result out of the game, but other games, I don't think it's in our hands to focus on what they do or don't do.”
