Despite an impressive 2-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC, Kaizer Chiefs are not getting comfortable. According to assistant coach Cedric Kaze, the focus has already shifted to their first home game of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season against Polokwane City on Wednesday evening.
Kaze, speaking to the media on Tuesday, acknowledged the tight schedule but expressed optimism about the upcoming match at FNB Stadium.
“We are already on to our second game of the week,” he said. “The schedule is a little tighter than we would have liked, but we are looking forward to our first home match of the season. We are all very focused. Fortunately, we didn’t suffer any injuries or suspensions in the last game, and we will have a couple of players back and available for selection.”
The coach emphasised the need for consistency, a weakness that plagued the team last season. “We are building a culture of togetherness, and you can see the players pull together even in the difficult moments,” Kaze explained. “We are aiming for consistency, which we lacked last season, because we want to be near the top of the league throughout the season.”
Defender Inácio Miguel echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of building on their opening win. “It’s very important to start off on the right footing so we are happy with the win on Sunday,” he said.
“But that is done now, and we have to focus on the next game. You need to perform at a high level every game, and this is something we are determined to improve from last season.”
Goalkeeper Brandon Petersen, who secured a clean sheet against Stellenbosch, stressed that results are the ultimate measure of success. “As a ‘keeper, a clean sheet is always welcome, although more important, I think, are the three points,” Petersen stated. “The result is ultimately what counts more.
However, it is crucial to have a solid defence as a collective, and this season, we have addressed where we went wrong in the past, and it showed on Sunday. Therefore, we are going into tomorrow’s game with the intention of scoring goals and not conceding.”
The match between Chiefs and Polokwane City is scheduled to kick off at 19:30 on Wednesday, 13 August, at FNB Stadium in Nasrec.
