Former South African player Junior Khanye has delivered his thoughts on why Kaizer Chiefs lost their Betway Premiership Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
Pirates extended their dominance over rivals Amakhosi with a gritty 2-1 victory to hand them their fifth consecutive defeat in the Soweto derby. Despite Chiefs taking the lead, Pirates produced a comeback to win the bragging rights.
“Orlando Pirates allowed Kaizer Chiefs build-up. Also, marking Kaizer Chiefs zonally in the middle field,” Khanye said as quoted by idiskitimes. “If you look at Mdu[Mduduzi Shabalala], you look at [Yusuf] Maart and also this guy [Nkosingiphile] Ngcobo they had all the time on the ball.
“But they were not effective. They had so many ball possession. They could’ve hurt Orlando Pirates if they were quality of players.
“How many clear-cut chances they created? Yes, it’s only this ball the goalkeeper piled away whereby Maart made a run, deep run and [Pule] Mmodi played him and then he had to cross. And then the other one [Tapelo] Xoki wanted to clear, and the goalkeeper made a save.
“But none other than that, Kaizer Chiefs how many chances they created? They pretended as if they are a good side in the first 20 minutes.”
The outcome left Chiefs ninth on the 16-team league table with 30 points from 26 matches.
