While he has left for greener pastures following a transfer to Italian Serie A side Atalanta, Ghana national team winger Kamaldeen Sulemana expressed gratitude for his time spent at English club Southampton FC.
Sulemana praised Southampton supporters and the club: “Through the highs and lows Southampton have been a family. Together we’ve grown through what we’ve been through.”
The Right to Dream Academy graduate experienced a difficult 2024-25 season with the Saints, who finished dead last on the English Premier League table and suffered relegation to the EFL Championship. The club are in the process of rebuilding and Sulemana was always a strong candidate to leave due to his high value. The former Stade Rennais star left after Atalanta paid Southampton a transfer fee of €17 million.
But the 23-year-old is grateful for his two-and-a-half seasons at the club. After Southampton were relegated from the Premier League at the conclusion of the 2022-23 season, Sulemana stayed with the club and helped them gain promotion back to the top flight.
Dealing with the rough and tumble nature of English football provided a serious test for Sulemana and many lessons for an entertaining player who is still young. Now the Ghanaian is well prepared for a similar level of football in Italy’s Serie A and will look to make his major breakthrough in a top-4 European league at Atalanta.
