The Federation of Zambia Football Association (FAZ) has backed Copper Queens captain Barbra Banda to emerge the winner of the CAF Women’s Player of the Year accolade.

The ceremony for the awards will be be staged on 16 December, 2024 in Marrakech, Morocco. Apart from Banda, the other outstanding players, who have been shortlisted for the prestigious Award include the dynamic sisters Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga (Malawi), Sanaa Mssoudy (Morocco), and Chiamaka Nnadozie (Nigeria).

FAZ President Andrew Kamanga, who is already in Marrakech ahead of the Award ceremony, believes Banda has done more than enough to deserve the accolade.

“From the Zambian perspective, we are holding our collective breath for our Copper Queens skipper Barbra Banda, who is in line for the CAF Women’s Player of the Year accolade,” said Kamanga in a statement seen by Pan-Africa Football.

“The Orlando Pride forward has already broken significant ground this year with her BBC World Football of the Year gong and also made the FIFPRO World XI which testifies to her incredible year. She is up against Sanaa Mssoudy (Morocco) and Chiamaka Nnadozie of Nigeria.

“It goes without saying that being nominated among the best in the world is an honour enough but we are confident that she has done enough to win the award tonight. Her story serves as a great inspiration to the girl child that hard work and talent can lift you. We wish our captain all the best.”

Last year, Asisat Oshoala earned the title of CAF Women’s Player of the Year, and this year’s nominees will look to follow in her illustrious footsteps.

The nominees for CAF Women’s National Team of the Year are Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia and the Cameroon Under-20 side, while Club of the Year contenders include TP Mazembe (DR Congo), AS FAR (Morocco), and Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa).
