Kampala Queens have officially clinched the 2024/25 Finance Trust FUFA Women Super League title, despite falling 2-1 to arch-rivals Kawempe Muslim in a dramatic showdown at the MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo on Saturday.

It was a day of mixed emotions for the Queens celebrating league glory while watching their unbeaten run come to a halt. The decisive edge came from their emphatic 4-1 first-leg win over Kawempe earlier in the season, which granted them superiority on head-to-head, a crucial factor in sealing the championship.

The clash lived up to its billing, with both sides displaying end-to-end action. Kampala Queens had a perfect chance to break the deadlock in the first half when Kamiyati Naigaga committed a foul in the box, gifting them a penalty.

But midfielder Shamirah Nalugya squandered the opportunity, sending her effort off target a costly miss that shifted the momentum. Kawempe responded ruthlessly. A foul on Agnes Nabukenya by goalkeeper Daisy Nakaziro saw the visitors awarded a penalty of their own. Nabukenya calmly converted to give Kawempe a 1-0 halftime lead.

After the interval, Kampala Queens found an equalizer through substitute Peace Muduwa, who had barely settled into the game after replacing Teddy Najjuma in the 52nd minute. Yet the celebration was short-lived.

Just six minutes later, Kawempe restored their advantage when Nabukenya headed home her second goal of the day from a well-weighted cross by Samali Nakacwa, making it 2-1.

Despite mounting late pressure and implementing tactical shifts, Kampala Queens couldn’t find a way back into the game. Still, the final whistle brought confirmation of their title triumph secured with two games to spare, against Tooro Queens and She Maroons.

Head coach Sharon Kizza admitted after the match that her side lacked intensity but praised the team for staying consistent throughout the campaign. With the league crown now theirs, Kampala Queens will turn their focus to closing the season in style even if the unbeaten dream has come to an end.
