Kayiwa clinches Ethiopian Premier League crown as Wasswa’s Coffee falters

Ugandan forward Allan Kayiwa has been crowned champion of the Ethiopian Premier League with his club, Ethiopian Insurance, securing the title with three games to spare.

The title celebrations kicked off on Monday after closest challengers Ethiopian Coffee, home to fellow Ugandan Geoffrey Wasswa, dropped crucial points in a 1-1 draw against struggling Mekelle 70 Enderta. Despite Wasswa putting Coffee ahead with a 54th-minute strike, his team couldn’t hold on, conceding an equalizer just 10 minutes later through Woldegiorgis.

That result proved decisive. Coffee, now stuck on 56 points with only two games remaining, are mathematically out of reach. Ethiopian Insurance sit comfortably at the top with 64 points and still have three games to go—making Kayiwa and his teammates untouchable at the summit.

Ironically, Coffee’s downward spiral began after their biggest high—beating Insurance 1-0 back on May 23. But instead of mounting a title charge, they slumped to two draws and a loss in their following fixtures, effectively handing the championship to their rivals.

Insurance are set to play their third-to-last game on Tuesday, but the celebrations have already begun, and rightly so. Kayiwa’s stellar campaign has culminated in a well-earned league title—a major milestone in his professional career abroad.
