Kaze diagnoses Kaizer Chiefs’ attacking crisis

Kaizer Chiefs second assistant coach Cedric Kaze has delivered a candid diagnosis of the club’s persistent goal-scoring problems, even as the team secured passage to the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup.

The Glamour Boys scraped past Angolan side Kabuscorp SCP, winning 5-4 on penalties after their two-legged tie ended 1-1 on aggregate (a 1-0 away loss followed by a 1-0 home win secured by Glody Lilepo). However, the narrow margin underscored a deep-seated offensive issue: Chiefs have failed to score more than a single goal in their last seven matches across all competitions, a run that stretches back to their 2-0 season-opening victory over Stellenbosch FC.

This lack of clinical finishing is a lingering ailment. Despite the team consistently creating chances in recent matches, the inability to convert them is reminiscent of the struggles that saw the club finish ninth in the league last season, even while ending their decade-long trophy drought under Nasreddine Nabi.

The Breakdown by Kaizer Chiefs coach: Execution in the Final Third

Addressing the media after Saturday’s match, Kaze pinpointed where the attack is breaking down, emphasising that the problem is one of execution and quality in critical areas.

“I would say that situations are different; the last pass and the last movement in attack have not been good,” Kaze told journalists at FNB Stadium.

The coach noted that the chances against Kabuscorp were present, but the final quality was lacking. He expressed hope that squad depth will soon provide a solution.

“I have to say that today [Saturday], the chances were there and the last passes were there, but the only thing that we do is to keep working. The good thing is that going into the next game, we will have more options and more players that are going to be available, and we hope that is going to help.”

The Naturena-based side must now sharpen their offensive tools quickly as they turn their attention back to the league. Chiefs, winless in their last two league outings following a 3-1 defeat to Sekhukhune United and a 1-1 draw with Marumo Gallants, will host AmaZulu FC on Wednesday at FNB Stadium.
