Kelechi Iheanacho claims it was perfect time to join Celtic

Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho has spoken of his belief that his summer move to Scottish champions Celtic came at the right time, following a proposed loan switch to the club that fell through in January.

The 28-year-old was reunited with his former Leicester City boss, Brendan Rodgers, after his contract was terminated by Sevilla just seven months after the initial transfer attempt.

Iheanacho’s arrival at Celtic Park as a free agent has been met with a mixed reaction from a section of the club’s passionate fanbase. However, Iheanacho has been quick to address the past, after scoring the winning goal in Celtic’s 2-1 victory against Kilmarnock on Sunday.

‘We just need to focus on future’

The Nigerian forward said that the past should be left in the past as they should look at the future. “We don’t need to talk about that now. We just need to put that aside and move on to the future.”

He went on to express his long-standing desire to play for the Glasgow giants, as he feels the best time to play for the defending champions is now.

“Of course, I always wanted to come to Celtic. It’s a massive club and obviously, I know the manager well. It didn’t work out that time, but now I think it’s the right time.”

Iheanacho stepped up to score a dramatic, late winner from the penalty spot. His 97th-minute strike secured all crucial three points and to sit top of the Scottish league with 13 points.
