Kenya national team striker Michael Olunga has tipped hosts Morocco to lift the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy.
The 35th edition of the biennial Africa Cup of Nations tournament organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), will be the second edition hosted by Morocco, after 1988.
Morocco was originally scheduled to host the 2015 edition, but withdrew due to fears stemming from the Western African Ebola virus epidemic.
The North Africans have been drawn in Group A alongside Zambia, Mali, and Comoros. In an interview, Olunga, who plays for Al Arabi in the Qatar Stars League explained why the Atlas Lions remain favourites to go all the way and lift the trophy.
“AFCON is a tight call. Ivory Coast and Egypt were really strong in the qualifiers, I’d put them in the top three. Morocco, they are playing at home, will have the crowd behind them,” said Olunga as quoted by Flashscore.
“And we all know what they did at the World Cup, and even in the qualifiers they had an impressive run. So for me, I’d say Morocco, Egypt and Ivory Coast as the top three.”
Morocco will kick off their campaign against Comoros at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Rabat on December 21. Their second match will be against Mali at the same venue on December 26, before they play their final group game against Zambia on December 29.
