Kenya President Ruto honoured by CAF for Outstanding Achievement Award

Kenyan President William Ruto was honoured with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) President’s Outstanding Achievement Award during the CAF Awards 2025 ceremony held in Morocco.

The award, presented by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), recognises the head of state’s growing commitment to strengthening sports structures and investing in football pathways across the country.

The award, which was conferred by CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe recognised Ruto for his contribution to the growth of football in Africa by successfully hosting the CHAN tournament. Kenyan Ambassador to Morocco, Joseph Gakinya, received the award on behalf of the President.

Speaking on behalf of Kenyans, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed, who was in attendance said: “Our Head of State William Ruto received a special award for his support towards football development in Kenya at the #CAFAwards2025. Kenyan Ambassador to Morocco, Jessica Gakinya, received the award on behalf of the President.

“With the elaborate support structure the government is putting in place for sports and particularly football, I have no doubt our players shall soon be recipients of these coveted accolades as well.”

Kenya reached quarterfinals of 2024 CHAN in Nairobi

In August, the Head of State led Kenya in co-hosting the most successful football tournament in the history of CHAN thereby setting new continental standards for meticulous planning, seamless coordination and flawless execution of a world-class footballing event.

Kenya hosted the thrilling final match, at the historic Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani, Nairobi. Through the President’s tireless efforts, unwavering support and motivation, the Harambee Stars registered a remarkable feat in her debut appearance by qualifying top in what was dubbed as ‘Group of Death’.

Harambee Stars under coach Benni McCarthy, scored another great milestone by being one of the last top eight teams that reached CHAN 2024 quarterfinals. More impressive is the fact that a truly inspired Stars stunned the world by beating the African giants Morocco in one of the most memorable matches in the entire tournament.

During the awards, Achraf Hakimi claimed the CAF Men’s Player of the Year award and compatriot Ghizlane Chebbak the CAF Women’s Player of the Year prize in a double triumph for Morocco.

The star-studded ceremony was attended by players, coaches and Legends from across the continent and beyond, in a celebration of excellence in African football as the game continues to make major strides on the international stage.

Paris Saint-Germain right-back Hakimi was named CAF Men’s Player of the Year after a sensational 2025 in which he won the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, French Ligue 1, Coupe de France and reached the final of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.
