Kenya’s youngster Odongo promises to shine after making CHAN squad

Kenya national team youngster Austin Odongo has revealed his readiness to take the opportunity and make an impressive show when the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) gets underway in East Africa.

While naming his final squad for the tournament, coach Benni McCarthy retained Odongo, who a year ago, was sitting for his national exams in Homabay County.

“I was really delighted when I received the call-up. It was a great reward after a good first season with Shabana,” the 19-year-old told CafOnline.com.

“I felt really motivated even to know that the coach thought about me and I could provide solutions to his striking force. I am looking forward to this opportunity and to give my all for the team if given a chance.”

The youngster, who plays for Shabana FC in the Kenyan Premier League, said of his opportunity to play in the CHAN: This is a huge opportunity for me because it is a huge platform with the national team.

“Playing against teams from the rest of the continent with players who have massive experience is a huge thing. It also offers a platform to move my career to the next level because you never know who is watching. My ambition is to give my best for the team when called upon and ensure that we do well.”

With just one days to go, Harambee Stars are now fully focused on their opening match against DR Congo on August 3 at Kasarani Stadium. Kenya will also face Angola, Morocco, and Zambia in Group A, with the support of the home crowd expected to play a big role in their debut CHAN campaign.
