Dylan Kerr makes bold Kaizer Chiefs league title claim

Dylan Kerr knows the Betway Premiership better than most, and now he wants the ultimate challenge. The seasoned tactician has declared himself the missing link for Kaizer Chiefs, boldly claiming he can handle the pressure of Naturena and transform the Soweto giants back into a consistent trophy-winning machine.

The 58-year-old mentor, currently coaching with Soccer Stars United (SSU) in the United States, made the audacious claim during an interview with SoccerBeat, expressing a level of confidence that matches the ambition of the Soweto giants.

“I Would Win the League”: Kerr’s Bold Kaizer Chiefs Claim

Despite the head coaching role at Naturena currently being filled by co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze—who stepped in following Nasreddine Nabi’s September departure—Kerr didn’t hold back on his desire for the post.

“If I were to be offered a job at Kaizer Chiefs, I would swim across the Mediterranean Sea right into Kaizer Motaung’s house,” Kerr declared. “You want the league? I can do it. I have always said that.”

The Glamour Boys haven’t tasted league glory since the 2014/15 season under Stuart Baxter. Kerr believes his proven track record of man-management and his knack for silverware against the odds make him the ideal candidate to restore the club’s “winning culture.”

A Pedigree of Development

Kerr’s argument rests on his history of identifying and polishing talent across South Africa. He pointed to the heavy presence of his former “students” currently occupying spots in the squads of the league’s “Big Three” and Stellenbosch FC.

Players that he coached include high-profile names such as Faawaaz Basadien and Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Evidence Makgopa, as well as Keletso Makgalwa and Thato Khiba.

“I would 100% win the league with Kaizer Chiefs,” Kerr insisted. “I would get them [the players] to play for me. It doesn’t matter who you are… as long as you get the players to put on the jersey and fight for you on the field. That is all it takes.”

To silence the sceptics, Kerr highlighted his 2021 Nedbank Cup triumph with Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM). Amidst the chaos of the COVID-19 pandemic and limited preparation time, he led the underdog side to a historic knockout victory.

Kerr has enjoyed a nomadic but impactful career in South Africa, leading the likes of Black Leopards, Baroka, and Moroka Swallows through various campaigns. His most recent stint in the country was a brief month-long stay with Marumo Gallants in July 2024 before he relocated to the US.

Whether the Kaizer Chiefs hierarchy is listening remains to be seen, but Kerr has certainly made his intentions—and his swimming abilities—clear.
