Kessié, Mendy and Mahrez capture Saudi Super Cup with Al Ahli

Franck Kessié, Édouard Mendy and Riyad Mahrez have claimed another piece of silverware with Al Ahli, who came out on top with a penalty shootout victory over Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr on Saturday in the Saudi Super Cup final following a 2-2 draw.

Ahli came from behind twice to win the final played in Hong Kong. Ronaldo gave Al Nassr the lead with a penalty kick in the 41st minute but Ivory Coast national team star Kessié displayed his technique with a curled low finish to level the game just before halftime.

Al Nassr, without Sadio Mané after the Senegalese received a red card in the semifinal, saw their level drop a bit in the second half but it seemed like they had done enough to win. Marcelo Brozović stole the ball just outside the Ahli penalty area and finished to put his team ahead in the 82nd minute and Ahli were left scrambling to save the match.

But just before stoppage time, Mahrez’s corner kick found the head of defender Roger Ibañez who nodded into an unguarded net after Nassr keeper Bento made an unsuccessful attempt to come out of his goal.

Tied at 2-2, the game went directly to penalty kicks after ninety minutes with Kessié and Mahrez among the takers for Ahli, who converted all five of their spot kicks. Brazilian forward Galeno converted the fifth attempt to win it for Ahli after Mendy did his part by saving from Abdullah Al Khaibari on Nassr’s fourth penalty.

It is Al Ahli’s first Super Cup triumph since 2016 and another success after the team won last season’s AFC Champions League to become the champions of Asian club football. Ahli begin their Saudi Pro League campaign next Thursday (August 28) when they host big spending top flight newcomers Neom SC.
