Kgatlana breaks silence: Why Banyana’s star missed 2024 WAFCON

The football world was left questioning when Thembi Kgatlana, Banyana Banyana’s formidable forward, was conspicuously absent from the squad for the CAF 2024 WAFCON in Morocco. Now, the 29-year-old has shed light on her decision, revealing that a “pre-arranged leave” was behind her non-participation.

Kgatlana’s influence on the national team is undeniable – a proven goal-scorer, a leader, and a source of invaluable experience. Her unexpected withdrawal sparked considerable discussion among fans eager to see her spearhead Banyana’s title defence. It’s a role she knows well, having been part of the triumphant 2022 WAFCON squad, despite her own tournament ending prematurely with an Achilles tendon injury.

Currently playing her club football for Tigres UANL Femenil in Mexico, Kgatlana faced the bittersweet reality of watching the continental showpiece unfold from afar.

As Desiree Ellis’s charges battled through the tournament, ultimately bowing out to Nigeria in a 2-1 semi-final defeat on Tuesday, Kgatlana shared her emotions. “It was difficult for me to watch Banyana Banyana exit WAFCON 2024 from the sidelines, but I am proud of the girls’ fight and achievement,” she said.

Addressing the flurry of speculation, Kgatlana emphasised: “My absence from the tournament has drawn speculation, but I want to simply clarify that I am taking a pre-arranged leave of absence from all football for personal reasons. I love representing my country and will do so again in the future.”

She also extended a message to her club’s loyal fanbase: “To Tigres fans concerned that I have not returned to Mexico, I will see you all again very soon and will continue to give my all for the shirt. There is nothing to worry about and no deeper story. Thank you for all the concerns.”
