Itumeleng Khune reveals the secret behind his iconic distribution

For two decades, Itumeleng Khune has been the gold standard for goalkeeping distribution in South Africa. From pinpoint side-volleys to 60-yard “throws like a pass,” the Kaizer Chiefs legend turned the goalkeeper’s box into a playmaker’s hub.

Now, at 38 and transitioning into his new role as a mentor, “Itu” has finally pulled back the curtain on the man who inspired his trademark style: former Argentine international Roberto Abbondanzieri.

Speaking in a recent interview, the former Bafana Bafana captain revealed that his “Distribution 101” philosophy wasn’t just a natural gift, but a studied craft that began during the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

The World Cup Spark

While many young keepers were watching the likes of Gianluigi Buffon or Oliver Kahn, a teenage Khune was mesmerised by Abbondanzieri, the Boca Juniors icon who was manning the poles for Argentina in Germany.

“I think I started watching a goalkeeper by the name of Roberto Abbondanzieri,” Khune explained. “I watched his games, and I later Googled him and watched his videos while he was still playing for Boca Juniors. He is the one who introduced me to the distribution of the ball.”

Evolving the Game – Khune

Khune, who earned 91 caps for the national team, emphasised that his desire to innovate was driven by a need to keep up with the evolution of global football.

“It has always been my goal to take goalkeeping to a whole different level,” he said. “Generations are different, and even football—the way it evolves—you have to always look around the world at what’s trending.”

By studying Abbondanzieri’s ability to turn defence into attack in a split second, the ex-Bafana star didn’t just become a shot-stopper; he became a vital attacking outlet for both club and country.

The Legacy: Distribution 101

As Khune nears the end of his illustrious playing days, he isn’t taking his secrets into retirement. He has already launched the Distribution 101 Goalkeeping Academy, aimed at grooming the next generation of ball-playing keepers.

His goal is simple: ensure that the “Khune Way”—which was actually the “Abbondanzieri Way” first—becomes a permanent feature of South African football.
