AmaZulu FC exorcised the demons of their midweek Nedbank Cup exit by clinching a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Richards Bay FC at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Pressure was mounting on head coach Arthur Zwane following a string of poor results, including a quarter-final loss to Casric Stars. However, Thabiso Kutumela provided the perfect response in the 27th minute, finishing off a slick team move that sliced through the Natal Rich Boyz’ backline.
The lead was short-lived as Richards Bay’s persistent pressure told just before the interval. Sanele Barns rose highest in the 40th minute to head home a pinpoint Thulani Gumede cross, ensuring the sides went into the break on level terms.
The second half became a tactical chess match. Richards Bay dominated possession after the hour mark, but Usuthu remained disciplined in a low block. The gamble paid off in the 82nd minute when veteran playmaker Hendrick Ekstein found the winner, securing AmaZulu’s first league win in four matches.

Over in Polokwane, the Limpopo Derby failed to produce goals but offered plenty of drama as Sekhukhune United and Polokwane City played to a 0-0 draw.
Sekhukhune, led by the veteran Bradley Grobler and the energetic Keletso Makgalwa, controlled the tempo of the first half but lacked the clinical edge to punish Rise and Shine. The second half saw ‘Babina Noko’ step up the intensity, with Vuyo Letlapa missing a golden opportunity from point-blank range, failing to beat Lindokuhle Mathebula in a one-on-one situation.
