La Liga 2 side Andorra acquires Equatorial Guinea #1 keeper Jesús Owono

After four seasons with a limited role at La Liga club Alavés, Equatorial Guinea national team star goalkeeper Jesús Owono has moved on loan to second tier side FC Andorra in search of regular playing time.

The explosive 24-year-old shot stopper now has an excellent opportunity to earn regular action at a high level club with the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals approaching at the end of the year. Owono’s spectacular performances have made him a player to watch and his latest move is an attempt to keep him in top form for both club and country.

Owono continues to be the undisputed number one for the Equatorial Guinea team, nicknamed Nzalang Nacional (“The National Thunder”), since debuting for the senior team in a friendly against Saudi Arabia soon after his 18th birthday in March 2019. He has made 38 appearances for his nation and impressed observers of African football at the 2021 and 2023 editions of the Africa Cup of Nations, where Equatorial Guinea reached the knockout stages in both tournaments.

However, despite some opportunities, Owono has not been able to fully establish himself in Spain’s top flight La Liga with Alavés. Since joining Alavés from lower league side San Ignacio ahead of the 2021-22 season, he has been limited to twelve La Liga appearances over four seasons and forced to settle for Copa del Rey games.

Now Owono appears likely to be an important player with Andorra, who are looking to survive in La Liga 2 after being newly promoted. The club is notably owned by famous FC Barcelona and Spain national team defender Gerard Piqué.
