Lawal urges Nigeria to focus on winning Morocco 2025 AFCON

Former Nigerian international Dimeji Lawal has called on the Super Eagles to forget their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification miss and focus on winning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

Nigeria’s chance to stay on course to qualify for the World Cup went up in smoke after they lost their final qualification round 4-3 on penalties to DR Congo following a 1-1 draw after extra time.

During the African Play-off final at the Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium on Sunday, the Super Eagles took the lead courtesy of Frank Onyeka, but Meschack Elia levelled for the Leopards before captain Chancel Mbemba converted the decisive spot-kick to send the Leopards into March’s inter-confederation play-off in Mexico.

Nigeria must use 2025 AFCON to repay Nigerians

“It’s sad that the Super Eagles will not be playing at the 2026 World Cup after that loss on penalties to DR Congo,” he told Complete Sports.

“However, I expect the players to do everything to win the 2025 AFCON for Nigerians. They have done well to support the team and the best gift that can appease them is the AFCON title.

“There is no doubt that Nigeria are one of the favourites to win the competitions in Morocco.”

In Morocco, Nigeria have been drawn in Group C alongside Tanzania, Uganda, and Tunisia. They will kick off their campaign against Taifa Stars on December 23.
