Wydad Casablanca is making a big splash in the transfer market. The Moroccan club has officially signed Syrian international striker Omar Al Somah as a reinforcement for its participation in the 2025 Club World Cup, scheduled for June 15 to July 13 in the United States.
The Syrian striker, a free agent after leaving Al-Arabi (Qatar), arrives at Wydad to bring his experience and goal-scoring instincts to a squad undergoing major rebuilding. Al Somah, 35, is considered one of the best strikers in the history of Syrian football, having enjoyed a long and distinguished stint with Al-Ahli of Saudi Arabia.
A prestigious addition... but only temporary?
While Al Somah's arrival represents a real boost for the Reds, the length of his contract remains dependent on financial considerations. The Syrian player's high salary represents a major obstacle to extending his contract beyond the World Cup. Wydad has therefore opted for a short-term contract, focused exclusively on international competition.
An ambitious recruitment
The Casablanca club, which will represent Morocco at this expanded Club World Cup, has made numerous additions in recent weeks. Alongside Al Somah, several new signings have been announced, including:
Hamza El Hannouri
Nordin Amrabat, former Moroccan international
Stephane Aziz Ki (Burkina Faso)
Bart Meijers (Netherlands)
Guilherme Ferreira (Brazil)
Arrival in Washington and final test run
The Wydad delegation left Morocco this Tuesday afternoon from Mohammed V Airport, bound for the United States, for a pre-tournament training camp. The squad will be based at Landon School in Maryland, where daily training sessions will take place.
A final friendly match is scheduled for Thursday, June 13 against the Canadian club Saint-Laurent SC, with the aim of fine-tuning the automatisms before the official matches.
Tough group: City, Juve, and Al Ain
Wydad has been handed a very tough draw. The Moroccan club will kick off its World Cup campaign against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City on June 18th. It will then face Juventus on June 22nd, before concluding the group stage against Al Ain (United Arab Emirates) on June 26th.
Wydad's matches will take place between Philadelphia and Washington, two of the host cities of this unprecedented 32-team tournament.
