Lesotho’s senior women’s football team coach Shalane Lehohla has explained why his ‘slugging’ girls suffered a 3-0 loss to hosts Malawi in a friendly on Friday.
The teams squared off at Mpira Stadium in Blantyre to fine-tune for the forthcoming COSAFA Women’s Championship next month.
The first of the two friendlies between the Scorchers and Lesotho’s Mehalalitoe proved to be one-way traffic.
A double from Malawi’s Asimenye Simwaka and Sabina Thom’s strike condemned the visitors to the defeat.
Reflecting on the match, Lehohla said his girls were second best in 50-50 challenges and technically to the Scorchers.
“We didn’t give enough energy for the game and that resulted in us giving them a lot of time on the ball, and that is why we ended up conceding by such a margin,” the coach told FAM’s media.
“Malawi was a better team in terms of physical appearance and technically. I can say it is a fair result. They were better.”
Looking ahead to the next game on Sunday, Lesotho’s mentor promised to right the wrongs noted in the opening game.
“It is the purpose of friendly games that you rectify the mistakes and become a better team. We were too sluggish in this game and that is why most of possession was for Malawi. They won most of the duels,” he added.
Malawi also have crucial Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Angola also next month, hence focusing on the friendlies.
