Charles Sagoe Jr: Arsenal Football Club media
Liberia football team coach Thomas Kojo has kept the door open for Arsenal FC’s youthful winger Charles Sagoe Jr. He is eligible to play for three national teams.
The Gunners’ attacker was born in England to a Ghanaian father and Liberian mother making him eligible to represent all the countries.
In view of this, the Lone Stars’ trainer called up the 21-year-old for the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier. However, Sagoe Jnr did not honour the call up, as he is yet to make up his mind. The winger debuted for the Gunners in the 2023 League Cup.
Kojo is quoted as telling Liberian Observer newspaper that the player’s parents are insisting that their son is not ready yet to play for Liberia. However, the coach insisted that they will not give up on the highly-rated attacker.
“Charles Sagoe Jr was officially contacted, and the football association wrote to Arsenal Football Club,” the coach is quoted saying. “The boy is a good player, and we followed him… We made an effort by sending him an official invitation, but at the moment, his parents don’t think he is ready to come to Liberia.”
Sagoe Jr came through the Hale End academy and is eligible to represent England although competition for places is very stiff.
The Gunners academy product is a regular for the Under-21 teams and has so far scored three goals. He was nominated for the PL2 Player of the Month award for August.
Liberia are competing strongly in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers they beat Namibia 3-1 on Thursday to take their tally to 14 points, one behind the Brave Warriors and seven behind leaders Tunisia.
