The Tripoli-based Western group of the Libyan Premier League's Championship group remains tightly contested with only three points separating first place from bottom side Al Ittihad after Tuesday's games. The top club qualifies for the playoff final to determine the league champion.
The team that made the biggest move was Tripoli side Al Madina who moved back into contention with an important 4-2 victory over Swehly SC. Former Etoile du Sahel forward Mohamed Ali Amri scored twice while Zambia national team midfielder Kelvin Kampamba and Nigerian forward Oto John added goals.
It was a dream start for Madina who were ahead by two goals within the opening 21 minutes beginning with Amri's brilliant free kick in the 9th minute. Amri also provided a perfect cross to set up Kampamba's tap-in early in the second half before adding a penalty kick.
Two of Libya's big spending clubs were in action but Al-Ittihad and Al Ahli Tripoli disappointingly settled for a 0-0 draw. League-leading scorer Mabululu was held silent by the Ittihad defense while their own high priced attack sputtered.
With Egyptian forward Kahraba, former Raja Casablanca playmaker Naoufel Zerhouni and Botswana national team forward Tumisang Orebonye in the team, Ittihad only have a disappointing return of two goals in three matches and sit last in the group.
In the early match on Tuesday, former Uganda Premier League champions Erick Kambale scored the only goal in Al Ittihad Misurata's 1-0 victory over Olympic Azzaweya. The former Express FC star converted from the penalty spot after a handball was committed in the Azzaweya penalty area.
Al Ahli Tripoli remain the favorites to claim top spot in the group but are showing some signs of vulnerability with all other teams in the group showing they are capable of battling for either top spot or second place which can lead to a place in next season's CAF Confederation Cup.
The league resumes again on Saturday with three matches from the Eastern group based in Benghazi.
