Three clubs from the Eastern group based in Benghazi confirmed their places for the final stage of the Libyan Premier League, which will take place in Milan, Italy where the champion will be determined. The Eastern group completed its final round of matches on Monday.
Al Ahly Benghazi and their rivals, Al Hilal Benghazi, are joined by Al Akhdar as the teams who will travel to Milan to compete for the title and qualification for continental competition. Al Ahly confirmed themselves as the top team in the Eastern group with a 3-0 victory over Al Tahaddi on Monday evening.
Led by their outstanding attacking trio which includes Nigerian mid-season acquisition Gabriel Orok as well as Libyan international Fadel Mansour and Algerian Zakaria Mansouri, Ahly had an easy time against struggling Tahaddi. Mansour was involved in all three goals, setting up Orok for the opener before scoring the second and assisting the third in a dominant victory.
Ahly finished two points ahead of Al Hilal, who eliminated defending champions Al Nasr from title contention with a 2-1 victory. Nigerian winger Junior Ajayi, formerly of Egyptian giants Al Ahly, provided the match winner in the second half for his first league goal since joining from Egyptian Premier League side Smouha in January.
There was only one place in the final phase at stake with Ahly and Hilal already qualified and Al Akhdar completed the job with a 2-0 shutout of Al Sadaqa. Angolan star Ary Papel's goal scoring struggles continued but a strong defense that includes Burkinabe international Trova Boni lifted Akhdar into the final phase.
There is still a lot to resolve in the Western group based in Tripoli that has faced multiple disruptions. The latest development occurred last Tuesday when a derby match between Western group leaders Al Ahli Tripoli and Al-Ittihad was abandoned after supporters ran onto the pitch.
Al-Ittihad's Naoufel Zerhouni scored towards the end of the first half before his provocative celebration in front of the Ahli bench led to the chaos, which included the burning of a team bus and injuries to the referee and Ittihad forward Kahraba who was hit by a water bottle. A decision has yet to be announced regarding the match with Ahli declaring they will not play on.
For now, Swehly SC and last placed Olympic Azzaweya are the only clubs in the group who have played all their games. Swehly secured their place in Milan with a 3-0 victory over Olympic and are one point ahead of Ahli, while Ittihad are still battling with Al Madina for the final spot.
