Azam FC head coach Rachid Taoussi is not giving up on the team finishing the Mainland Premier League campaign this season among the top two teams.
The Ice Cream Makers started the season on a high and at one point led the 16-team league table before they were displaced to find themselves in third position behind leaders Young Africans (Yanga SC) and second-placed Simba SC.
So far, Azam trail Simba by six points, while they are 10 points behind Yanga. However, following their recent 4-0 win against Tanzania Prisons, coach Taoussi is confident that if they keep the same tempo in remaining matches, they will secure their target of finishing amongst the top two teams.
“We know the competition is tough, but we have a strong squad that can fight until the end of the season. We need consecutive wins to achieve our goals, which is a top two finish,” Taoussi said as quoted by the Guardian.
On the emphatic win against Prisons, Taoussi said: “The team played with great discipline, created numerous chances, and capitalised on them effectively. This victory is crucial for our players’ morale, and we must maintain this momentum in upcoming matches.”
Last season, the Chamazi-based Azam finished second after amassing 69 points from 40 matches. They managed 21 wins, six draws and three defeats. They finished ahead of Simba, who came third with the same 69 points but Azam had a better goal aggregate.
With the international break coming up, Azam’s next league assignment will be against KenGold at Sokoine Stadium on April 2.
