Ligi Kuu Bara: Davids discloses what affected Simba’s momentum in title race

Simba SC coach Fadlu Davids has spoken for the first time about why his side lost the Mainland Premier League title to rivals Young Africans (Yanga SC) on the final day of the season.

Yanga secured their fourth consecutive Mainland Premier League title following their 2-0 victory against Simba at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Wednesday. The reigning champions only needed a draw to clinch the crown, but second-half goals from Pacome Zouzoua and substitute Clement Mzize sealed a commanding win.

The defeat – coming in the 184th Kariakoo Derby – saw Simba fall short once again against their long-standing rivals, missing out on the title. Davids pointed to external factors as having disrupted their momentum in the title race.

“There were a lot of off-the-pitch challenges that didn’t go our way. It was frustrating, but we will sit down with the management to plan the way forward,” revealed Davids, as quoted by the Guardian. “We’ve laid the foundation. Now we need to add power and precision.

“I’ve built a solid team foundation, but it’s not enough. We need to bring in more players with the mentality and quality to change the outcome of big matches. That’s where the real gap lies between us and Yanga.”

Davids added: “One thing we can be proud of is securing second place, which guarantees us a return to the CAF Champions League next season. Also, reaching CAF Confederation Cup final this season is a significant milestone, showing the potential of this group.”

Simba captain Mohammed Hussein sent a message to the club’s faithful: “First and foremost, I thank the Almighty for granting us the strength to begin and conclude the league safely.

“I also extend my heartfelt appreciation to our leadership – Board Chairman Mohammed Dewji, Vice Chairman Murtaza Mangungu, the entire technical team, management, club members, and our dedicated supporters.

“To our fans, I don’t even know how to express my deepest gratitude for your immense love and loyalty. Truly, we owe you. Your energy, your presence under the scorching sun or pouring rain – you were there. You never gave up on us during the tough times. May God bless you abundantly.

“You are the true heroes. The end of this season marks the beginning of preparations for the next. We will not rest; we will continue to fight to bring you joy.”

The Citizens were the only side to defeat Msimbazi Reds in the league this season, with a 1-0 win in the first round.
