Simba SC head coach Fadlu Davids has stated that he was frustrated that his players could not score a second goal despite dominating Kagera Sugar in their 1-0 Mainland Premier League win at KMC Stadium on Sunday.

Ugandan forward Steven Mukwala scored what turned out to be the winner for the Msimbazi Reds in the 17th minute of the closely fought contest against the already-relegated Sugar Millers. The win was crucial for Simba as their rivals Young Africans (Yanga SC) swept aside Dodoma Jiji 5-0, retaining the league top spot.

“It was very difficult to play a match with so much stress, you know, not getting the second goal in the first half, and then just trying to kill the game with possession, not moving forward. They were not pressing, they were staying back, so it was about running the time down because one eye is on the next match,” Davids told Pan-Africa Football.

“Kagera had nothing to play for, so it was very important for us to do everything and get the three points. It is a job well done and now our focus shifts to the next game.”

On why he took off league top scorer Jean Ahoua: “I said it was not about individual awards, Ahoua of course wants to score, he is on 16 goals and he wants to score his 17th but, it is more about the result. He played 90 minutes in the last match and he definitely couldn’t have played 90 minutes again.”

Davids continued: "We know we've got another big match coming in two days, so it was fair enough to freshen up the squad. The freshness of the squad was the top priority with the third game in a week, and well done to the players for getting the three points.”

The victory enabled Simba to remain second on the 18-team league table with 78 points, one less than Yanga, ahead of the eagerly-awaited Kariakoo derby on June 25 at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.
