With rivals Simba SC breathing down their necks at the top of the Mainland Premier League table, Young Africans (Yanga SC) coach Miloud Hamdi has set a target of winning all their remaining fixtures, starting with Namungo FC at KMC Stadium on Tuesday.
The Citizens saw their lead at the top reduced to just one point after the Msimbazi Reds won all four of the matches they had in hand. Simba beat Mashujaa 2-1, edged out stubborn JKT Tanzania 1-0, hammered Pamba Jiji 5-1, before defeating KMC 2-1 on Sunday.
The 12 points saw them reach 69 points, which is one point behind Yanga with four matches left to conclude the season. The four include the Kariakoo derby, which was not played on March 8 but has now been rescheduled for June 15 at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.
“Our main aim is only one, to win every match that is in front of us. We need to be champions this season and that’s clear,” Hamdi told Pan-Africa Football . “I have respect for Namungo, I know they have a good team but for us on (Tuesday), it is an important game to win.
“We should not drop points again, considering that we are at home. Three points are very important for us. I’m happy some of my key players are back in the squad, so I have a solid squad to field my line-up from.”
On Yanga’s readiness for the fixture, Hamdi said: “We have prepared very well ahead of the game, all the players are psyched enough to face Namungo and that is something positive. We have had a long time without a competitive match, but we will play with great focus.”
A win for Yanga will stretch their lead to four points, with Simba shifting their focus to the CAF Confederation Cup, where they are scheduled to face Morocco’s RS Berkane in the final.
