Young Africans marched to an easy victory on Sunday, thrashing midtable side Mashujaa FC by a 5-0 score at the Lake Tanganyika Stadium to keep the pressure high on title rivals Simba SC.
Clatous Chama scored twice for the Citizens with midfielders Khalid Aucho and Duke Abuya also each adding a goal in the victory. After hosts Mashujaa held out for the opening half hour, Kenyan midfielder Abuya was in the right place to fire in after benefiting from a fortunate deflection.
There was still hope for Mashujaa at halftime but Yanga quickly extinguished any worries about dropping points early in the second half. In the 48th minute, Ivorian midfielder Pacôme Zouzoua made a dazzling run down the left wing before crossing to find Zimbabwean marksman Dube who produced a powerful diving header to double the lead.
Zouzoua then played the role of provider again in the 52nd minute and the rout was on for Yanga. The former ASEC Mimosas star picked out Uganda national team star Aucho at the far post who volleyed in to make it 3-0.
Zambian playmaker Chama then added his contributions in the final twenty minutes to complete the drubbing. Yanga are now five points clear of Simba at the top of the table but have played two more matches, still leaving Simba as the team holding the edge to snatch back top spot.
Earlier on Sunday, Singida Black Stars dropped points once again in a match the big spending club should have won. Jonathan Sowah and Serge Pokou scored for the hosts but inconsistent defense allowed Pamba Jiji to find two goals of their own. Singida, fourth place and seventeen points back of Yanga, continue to slip towards the pack which is beginning to catch up.
All eyes now turn to Monday's intriguing showdown between Simba and Azam FC. Third placed Azam continue their efforts to be more than the "best of the rest" in Tanzania's top tier and could provide help to Yanga by taking points off Simba who want to maintain their pace at the top.
