Olympique Marseille ended a two-match losing streak on Friday in Ligue 1 with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Hamed Junior Traoré on the scoresheet in their 3-1 home victory over Metz.
After falling to defeat at Monaco and at home against Lille, OM recovered with a dominant effort in the midst of a close race for qualification to next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Visitors Metz hardly had a sniff at goal and it was Aubameyang who put the hosts ahead in the 13th minute. After getting out on a 2-v-1 break, Mason Greenwood set up the Gabon national team legend for a perfect strike into the top corner for his 9th league goal and 13th in all competitions.
Greenwood played provider again less than three minutes into the second half, assisting Igor Paixão for the second goal. Metz did respond immediately through Georgiy Tsitaishvili to keep the match close.
But substitute Traoré dispelled any hopes of a surprise result in second half stoppage time. Algeria forward Amine Gouiri got the assist to help OM move a point ahead of Lille for third place and France’s final Champions League spot.
