Ligue 1: Gouiri smashes in late goal to give Marseille narrow victory

Amine Gouiri came off the bench to fire in a crucial winning goal for Olympique Marseille in their 1-0 Ligue 1 result over visitors Auxerre.

It had been nearly a month since the Algerian international had found the net, but after a spell of injuries and substitute appearances he provided a timely contribution.

With plenty of possession but little to show for it, hosts OM were neutralized by a strong defensive effort from relegation candidates Auxerre. Despite more attacking intent from both teams after halftime it always appeared that the visitors were playing for a draw.

But in the 79th minute, pacey forward Igor Paixão made a darting run down the left wing to get to the end line and his low cross caused panic in the Auxerre penalty area. A clearance attempt popped into the air where Gouiri was there to volley in from eight yards out.

It is his 6th Ligue 1 goal of the campaign and ninth in all competitions. The result will keep third place secure on the table for OM, who are eight points back of league leaders Paris Saint-Germain and seven points behind second place RC Lens.

Their next fixture will be at home against Lille on March 22.
