Atalanta head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has openly criticised Nigeria player Ademola Lookman following his penalty miss in their UEFA Champions League 3-1 defeat against Club Brugge at Gewiss Stadium on Tuesday.
Having lost the first leg meeting 2-1 Atalanta were looking to overturn the defeat and qualify for the last 16, but it was Brugge, who took a deserved lead with only three minutes played when Chemsdine Talbi hit the back of the net.
Talbi made it 2-0 in the 27th minute before Ferran Jutglae ensured they were leading 3-0 in the 45th minute. Lookman sparked a comeback for Atalanta in the 46th minute but he later saw his penalty saved by Simon Mignolet to exit the competition.
“Lookman was not supposed to take that penalty, he is one of the worst penalty takers I've ever seen,” the Italian manager said following the match as quoted by EuroSport.
“He has a frankly terrible record even in training, he converts very few of them. Retegui and De Ketelaere were there, but Lookman in a moment of enthusiasm after scoring decided to take the ball and that was a gesture I did not appreciate at all.”
In the Champions League, Lookman has so far scored five goals from seven matches and provided one assist.
