Lugazi FC bolster backline with youthful defender Yusuf Mafabi

Uganda Premier League side Lugazi FC have officially unveiled Yusuf Mafabi, a promising and versatile defender, as their latest acquisition in the ongoing transfer window.

The 21-year-old joins from Mbarara City FC and has penned a two-year contract, becoming Lugazi’s third signing of the window. His arrival follows that of striker Paul Busolo—also from Mbarara City—and defender Dauson Mafumu, who signed from Express FC.

“We are pleased to announce the signing of Yusuf Mafabi from Mbarara City, with the defender signing a two-year contract with us,” the club confirmed on Wednesday.

During his unveiling, a delighted Mafabi expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm for the new chapter.

“I feel so good! I am so happy because I am among the few lucky players who have been given a chance to play for this great club,” Mafabi said.

“This team has a great management, good technical team and above all, it gives opportunities to the young players to develop their talents. I will work hard to repay their trust and faith in me.”

Mafabi’s football journey began at True Vine Soccer Academy and Kyetume Junior Team, before making his big break with Arua Hill SC in 2020. While at Arua Hill, he balanced UPL football duties with school competitions, representing Gombe High School in 2020 and Buddo SS in 2021.

He joined Mbarara City in 2023 and swiftly established himself as a key defensive figure. The young center-back made 22 appearances last season, playing an instrumental role in helping the Ankole Lions secure 12th place and avoid relegation with 32 points—just one above Lugazi, who survived by a razor-thin margin.

With Mafabi’s youthful energy and topflight experience, Lugazi FC hope to tighten their backline and build towards a more stable campaign in the upcoming UPL season.
