Burnley FC’s South African striker Lyle Foster registered his first Premier League goal of the season on Saturday against Manchester United.
However, Ruben Amorim’s charges won the game 3-2 after a VAR review and penalty at Old Trafford saw Bruno Fernandes help the Red Devils snatch maximum points. It was such an anti-climax for Burnley who seemed to have done enough to salvage a point.
Former Orlando Pirates star Foster reacted the fastest to stab the ball into the net with his outstretched left leg and silence Old Trafford. The South African’s 55th minute goal cancelled out United’s lead earned by default after Burnley’s Josh Cullen’s 27th minute own goal.
However, the positive mood Foster’s goal gave the Clarets lasted just two minutes as Mbeumo restored United’s lead. It was his second goal in three games across all competitions since his switch from Brentford but his first in the Premier League in this campaign.
The Cameroonian made a clever run into the box then drifted back inside to slide a cut-back from the left into the net. Eventually, Jaidon Anthony did drag Burnley back into the contest with an equaliser in the 66th minute. However the drama was reserved for injury time.
All the visitors’ hardwork was undone by a penalty they gave away after one of their players tugged Ivorian winger Amad Diallo’s shirt, resulting in a penalty which United skipper Fernandes converted seven minutes into added time.
The Portuguese atoned for his miss in last week’s game to hand the Red Devils their first league win of the season.
Foster will take part in crucial 2026 World Cup qualifying games for South Africa over the international break against Lesotho and Nigeria before returning to action with Burnley,
who next face Liverpool at home on September 14.
