Lebo Maboe demands more from Chiefs despite back-to-back wins

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Lebohang Maboe insists that the Glamour Boys cannot afford to take their foot off the gas if they are to salvage their Betway Premiership campaign and finish the season on a high.

Amakhosi secured their second consecutive league victory on Saturday night, brushing aside a struggling Magesi FC 2-0 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. While the headlines were grabbed by teenage scorers Wandile Duba and Mfundo Vilakazi, it was the veteran presence of Maboe that knitted the performance together, earning him the Man-of-the-Match accolade.

“At this time of the season, it’s all about collecting points,” Maboe told SuperSport TV post-match. “We’ve had a few tough results lately, so it was time to step up. You never get tired of winning, but we have to stay hungry.”

KAIZER CHIEFS PUSHING FOR THE TOP THREE, SAYS LEBO MABOE

The victory marks a vital shift in momentum for Nasreddine Nabi’s side. Before their recent turnaround—which began with a 1-0 win over Durban City FC—Chiefs had endured a dismal run of three straight defeats.

The six points harvested over the last week have reignited Amakhosi’s hopes of a third-place finish, a result that would guarantee them a spot in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup.

Magesi FC, currently anchored to the bottom of the table, offered little resistance outside of a brief spell of pressure before the interval. For their new head coach Allan Freese, the struggle continues; he has managed just three points from his opening five games in charge.

Reflecting on the tactical battle, Maboe noted that the clash required a different kind of mental toughness.

“It was a good performance against a very awkward team that relies heavily on long balls. We had to be sharp on the second balls,” Maboe explained. “In the first half, we were a bit slow to react, but we addressed it at halftime and were much better in the second period.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR CHIEFS?

The Naturena-based outfit will now head into the March international break with a sense of relief. The squad will have a two-week window to rest and recalibrate before returning to action on April 6, where they face an away trip to Orbit College FC.
