Betway Premiership basement-dwellers Magesi FC have officially broken their silence regarding the absence of head coach John Maduka, confirming the strategist has been placed on “recess” pending a performance review.
Maduka has been a notable absentee from the dugout during Magesi’s recent fixtures against Orlando Pirates and Upington City FC. His absence fueled speculation that his time in Limpopo was nearing an end, with assistant coach and former South African junior international Abram Nteo stepping in as caretaker.
Addressing the media ahead of Friday’s crucial clash against Golden Arrows at Seshego Stadium, club spokesperson Abel Rakoma clarified that the decision to sideline Maduka stems from the team’s precarious position at the bottom of the log.
“The situation with John Maduka is that the club has decided to place him on a recess,” Rakoma explained. “Primarily because his performance contract is being assessed. We are currently at the bottom of the log, and having started the season with us, it is vital that we assess his progress now that we are midway through the campaign.”
Rakoma further noted that the club needed to step back to evaluate the technical situation with “undivided attention.”
The mandate for Maduka was reportedly clear: keep the club within the top 10. With Magesi currently languishing at the “tail end” of the table, the hierarchy has admitted the current situation is unacceptable.
“We were supposed to be at position 10 or higher. That was the agreement,” said Rakoma. “Being at the bottom is not appealing to us as a club. I think before the end of the week, we will have finalised the evaluation of his performances.”
