Mahrez strikes as Al Ahli overcome Al Sadd in AFC Champions League

Riyad Mahrez scored his first goal in over a month for Saudi giants Al Ahli as they defeated Qatari counterparts Al Sadd in a highly anticipated AFC Champions League Elite clash on Tuesday.

Known most for his magical left foot, the Algerian superstar showed why his weaker foot demands respect with a low right-footed finish to give the visitors a first half lead at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in Doha. His last goal came on international duty in Algeria’s 3-0 victory over Somalia in 2026 World Cup qualifying on November 9.

While he has yet to score in Saudi Pro League action this season, the former Leicester City and Manchester City legend continues to be a key contributor in continental action with 3 goals and an assist from 4 matches in the Champions League. Al Ahli now have 10 points from 4 games in the league phase of Asia’s top club competition, leaving them in second place two points back of Saudi rivals Al Hilal. The top eight finishers will advance to the knockout stage.

The Jeddah club return to domestic league play on Saturday with another difficult opponent, reigning Pro League champions Al Ittihad. Both clubs have gotten off to less than stellar starts in league play, with Ahli in 5th place on 13 points while Ittihad are two points back in 8th place.
