Riyad Mahrez on target but Al Ahli held to thrilling draw by Al Duhail in AFC Champions League Elite

Riyad Mahrez was on the scoresheet once again for Al Ahli Jeddah, but his side were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Qatari giants Al Duhail in Round 2 of the AFC Champions League Elite.

The Algerian star was at the heart of Al Ahli’s attacking play in Doha. After Edmilson Junior fired Al Duhail ahead in the 25th minute, the Saudi visitors responded with intent. Matheus Gonçalves struck the equalizer in the 42nd minute before Mahrez showcased his trademark quality just moments before the break.

Mahrez’s goal came after a costly mistake from Al Duhail’s goalkeeper, whose misplaced pass was intercepted by the Algerian star. Without hesitation, Mahrez pounced on the error and fired a precise shot into the net, putting Al Ahli ahead just before halftime.

However, the advantage didn’t last long. Only three minutes into the second half, Polish striker Krzysztof Piątek struck for Al Duhail to level the contest at 2-2. Both sides pushed for a winner, but neither was able to break the deadlock as the referee’s whistle confirmed the stalemate.

The result leaves Al Ahli on four points, placing them second in the main stage standings of the AFC Champions League Elite, while Al Duhail remain ninth with just one point.
