Mahrez’s two assists spark dramatic comeback for Al Ahli in draw with Al Hilal

It appeared that a clash of Saudi giants would end in embarrassment for Al Ahli but Riyad Mahrez’s two assists inspired a late rally and 3-3 draw with Al Hilal on Friday.

The Algerian icon’s dead ball skills came in handy for Ahli, who scored three goals in the final twenty minutes to salvage a point in a match that looked lost and gone for the hosts in Jeddah. Mahrez joined Ivan Toney to make a massive impact, with Toney beginning the comeback with his 78th minute goal.

Mahrez then produced his first assist with a beautiful whipped cross from the right wing and Toney met the ball with a powerful header past Hilal and Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

With 87 minutes gone, the deficit was reduced to one goal and Ahli completed their comeback in stoppage time. Mahrez once again provided the service, with his corner kick finding the head of Turkish defender Merih Demiral to beat Bounou another time. Ahli now have five points from three league matches so far this season, level with Hilal.

Mahrez and Al Ahli turn focus to another competition

It is the second comeback of the week for Ahli, who had to scramble to avoid an embarrasing result at home and defeat Uzbek club Nasaf Qarshi. Another challenge awaits on Tuesday in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, where Ahli face African club champions Pyramids FC of Egypt in the quarterfinals.
