Mako and Monyane leave Orlando Pirates

Orlando Pirates have confirmed the departure of two defenders, Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane, following the conclusion of the 2024/25 season.

The Soweto giants announced the news on Friday afternoon, extending their gratitude to both players.

“We bid farewell to Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane,” reads the club’s statement. “The Club thanks them for their commitment and contribution to Orlando Pirates. Wishing them the very best in their next chapters.”

The just-ended 2024/25 campaign saw a significant reduction in game time for both Mako and Monyane. Despite the recent coaching changes at the club with Jose Riveiro parting ways with Bucs, it appears a fresh start for the duo will be found elsewhere.

Mako, who joined the Buccaneers from Chippa United in July 2018, will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of June. Last season, he made 26 appearances in all competitions as coach Riveiro often preferred Deon Hotto in the left wing-back role.

Throughout his Pirates stint, the 31-year-old Mako made 173 appearances, scoring twice and providing eight assists.

Meanwhile, Monyane, 25, a graduate from the Pirates youth academy, faced a challenging season. Promoted to the first team in July 2019, Monyane found himself playing second fiddle to Deano van Rooyen, who joined from the club Stellenbosch FC this past campaign.

The 25-year-old managed only 12 appearances. And with the Soweto giants having already secured young right-back Tshepho Mashiloane and also retaining Bandile Shandu, Monyane, who is set to become a free agent by the end of June, will now seek opportunities elsewhere.

He concluded his time at Pirates with 94 appearances, four goals, and four assists.
