Malawi: Bullets sign Mwale to solve first-choice keeper’s puzzle

In the past few seasons, Malawi football giants FCB Nyasa Big Bullets have struggled to identify an outright first-choice goalkeeper.

Last season, then Bullets coach Peter Mponda rotated the goalkeeping position between Richard Chimbamba and Innocent Nyasulu with neither able to prove outrightly better than the other. Austin Chirambo, Clever Mkungula and Sharifu Swadiki are the other keepers for the Blantyre giants.

This factor that might have contributed to the People’s Team’s failure to win the domestic league title in the last two seasons. The People’s Team won their last league championship in the 2023 season.

Little wonder, Bullets have bolstered their goalkeeping department by signing Maclean Mwale from fellow FDH Premiership side Karonga United.

What you should know about Bullets new keeper Mwale

A statement from Bullets suggest that they had to move in quickly to sign the keeper amid interest from other local giants such as Mighty Wanderers.

“FCB Big Bullets are delighted to announce that we have reached an agreement with Karonga United for the signing of goalkeeper Maclean Mwale,” reads part of the statement.

“The agreement represents an important step in finalizing Mwale’s move to The People’s Team once the transfer window opens.”

The 27-year-old built a solid goalkeeper profile at Karonga United last season. He kept 10 clean sheets in 28 league matches as the Northern Region-based outfit settled for a sixth-place finish.
