The Malawi senior women’s national football team will continue with camp training even though they are through to the next qualifying round of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers following Congo’s withdrawal.

The Scorchers will still begin camp training on Friday, 7th February 2025 in Blantyre as scheduled despite the Confederation of African Football's confirmation of the withdrawal of Congo from the qualifying race.

Malawi coach Lovemore Fazili has since named a 30-member provisional squad of home-based players for the camp training, according to the Football Association of Malawi website.

“The Scorchers were initially scheduled to play against the Republic of the Congo in the WAFCON qualifiers, but Congo has withdrawn from the competition. As a result, Malawi will proceed with camp while exploring the possibility of securing a friendly match,” the statement reads.

Fazili has for now excluded foreign-based players such as Chawinga sisters, Temwa and Tabitha, and Rose Kabzere from the tentative squad.

Malawi were scheduled to face Congo over two legs on February 20 and 25 but now await second round clashes with either Zimbabwe or Angola in October 2025.

The Scorchers are gunning for their first WAFCON qualification and they have never been to any major competition with their biggest success being winning the regional Cosafa Championship in 2023.
